I hope this does not sound too silly: The intensity is
building up gradually through out the three, the first one is the most
soft, the third is the most bright and intense. The 'mf' in the second
piece perhaps points out the position of this piece in the whole work.
Although those spots are the most intense in the second piece, a more
intense number three is yet to be played (by a Bb clarinet!).
