Klarinet Archive - Posting 000791.txt from 1998/10

Erin is looking for orchestral works that begin with a clarinet
solo. How about beginning with multiple clarinets in solo??
Schoenberg arrangement of the Brahms g-minor quartet opens with
three clarinets playing all alone: E-flat, B-flat, and bass. and
covering four octaves (if I remember correctly).
It is the only Brahms work in which a bass clarinet player gets
anything to do, though that is thanks to Schoenberg and not
to Brahms.
