The mouthpiece should make vastly more difference than the ligature, so I
think that is where you should start. Professional-grade hard rubber
mouthpieces from Selmer, Vandoren, etc., which list for about $100 (but
sell for less) will give you good bang for the buck. Hite and some other
mouthpieces get good word-of-mouth on the list, too. Try some if at all
possible. I own a number of mouthpieces I bought on reputation and brand
name that now sit virtually unused.
