David...I've focused on bass clarinet for about four years now and am
basically a jazz player...although most recent efforts have been in
transitioning to Eurpoean classical music.

I've never seen any transcriptions of Dolphy solos.Except for biographical
material and recordings, in various media, there doesn't seem to be much in
writing on Dolphy's work.

But as you know, an accepted learning exercise for jazz players is to
transcribe solos themselves. It has considerable value for all the obvious
purposes...recognizing changes, fixing solo and improv lines in the
transcriber's mind, and establishing tonal relationships.

I strongly recommend your student get a Dolphy CD and do his/her own
transcription. With a CD, of course, he/she can do A to B segments of two
or four bars at a time until he/she devleops some skill...and then extend
the exercise to eight or more measures.

There are some great jazz teachers at Virgina Commonwealth. I think they
could be very helpful in this regard. Fred S.
