Excuse my ignorance - what is "grunting"? I've not heard that term
before.

It's a subtone, sounds like a grunt that occurs if the register tube is the
wrong length. Nice for multiphonics, but not much else ;). Something you
wouldn't want to occur while playing the Pines of Rome solo. Brand (first
week or so) new Clarinets don't always do it right away, but after a few
days, it tends to show up if it is going to do it.
