Another way to find gigs is to MAKE THEM HAPPEN yourself. This means creating
your own opportunities. You might begin by establishing a duo, trio, quartet
or whatever and offering your services free to nursing homes or non-profit
agencies for fund raisers and the like. Make some business cards to give to
people. As your reputation spreads, you can begin charging for performances.
If you are self-motivated and self-directed, you don't need to depend on
others to refer you to paying jobs. You can invent your own future. It might
take several years before you make any money playing and, even then, you might
be looking at $100 to $200 per MONTH, enough to pay for reeds...and a little
fun. If you are like me, you play for the pleasure of playing. Any cash you
get is frosting on the cake.
