Subj: [kl] grunt- register tube

I've noticed several postings about the "grunt" in the upper register
on some clarinets. Most replies have focused upon the register tube
and its length. Remember that there are several other factors. The
interior shape of register tubes varies a good bit--mostly it's a
sort of hourglass shape inside, and it makes a difference--A
clarinets' tubes are different from B-flat, and different companies'
tubes are different in interior dimension and shape. Also, the
clearance of the register pad is critical--if the key opens too far,
the horn is more likely to grunt. Try closing the key somewhat (like
with a temporary tape bumper behind the touchpiece). If the
clearance between pad and seat is more than about the thickness of a
nickel, it's too open and the clarinet will "grunt."
Remember also that there's no substitute for correct embouchure and
tongue position in the upper register.

Good luck!
