Hi Line,
Funny you mention the Poulenc Gloria, we're playing
it this week for an NMSO subscription. The piece
starts off in B major, but travels through many keys
(in a couple of spots, two at once!), including Eb minor,
and D Major. I'm not sure if our bass clarinetist is
transposing, I will ask her tonight at rehearsal. Check out
a couple of missprints in the second clarinet part....one
measure before rehearsal 29, the g should be a g#, and
the e should be an f#.
The is a wonderful quote in the "Domine Deus" from Poulenc's
Clarinet Sonata, exactly! Last night we were wondering
which piece came first....a quick look in Baker's reveals
that Poulenc wrote both pieces shortly before he died in
1963, the Gloria in 1959, and the Sonata in 1962.
Incredible music, enjoy!
Lori Lovato
