Not entirely true. The softer dynamics do make the movement more
difficult to play, but the purpose was not to make it harder. Stravinsky
was very precise with his tempo/dynamic/accent/etc. designations and did
so for musical purposes. He ranted and raved about conductors who did
their own interpretations of his music. (See the White book on Stravinsky
or any of the Robert Craft books). He used the mf dynamic for particular
musical effect.

I may be reading into this, but I believe the original question
deals with a performer based imagery, not with the medium of the
composition. What story-line can the performer imagine to, perhaps, more
effectively communicate the music to the audience? The same is true of
the next statement.
