I've learned that the audience can hear the clarinets better if they're
in the center - the sound can then float up. Clarinets directly in front
are totally drowned out. We had a gorgeous Johnny Comes Marching Home in
lower register that no one heard. We had to add the tenors. Later in
the same show, another clarinet feature was heard much better because
they were away from the sidelines.

Join two of us (are there more?) on the marching band list!
