A couple of weeks ago my band completed against a high school group from
central Pa. The school colors were red, white and blue. The clarinet section
was full of vito's in their school colors. While watching them warm up the
section decided to switch parts of these horns with each other and several
red, white and blue combinations popped up. While I was sure that I really
did not like the results I did decide to keep any feelings to myself. I also
saw several yellow clarinets that night with another high school band. Three
days later I bought a clear vito and have been having a lot of fun with my new
toy.
I also noticed a trend this year in marching band competitions.
Arrangers and directors are featuring the clarinets right up front and "in
your face" much more now. A couple are actually featuring them in the
opening set. The traditional "trill runs" are not as forte as they used to
be. Not everyone is trying to duplicate the drum corp style. We are
everywhere. Jer
