Although I have not purchased (and therefore not looked at) this study book
(sorry, I promise I will soon), I think I know why one would want to work
out the studies in a 2341 pattern. If one were to simply play the scales in
one pattern, starting on the same note each time, one would learn little.
By varying the metric pattern and the starting degree of the scale, the
facility on the scale is greatly enhanced - it is no longer pure muscle
memory, but has valuable aspects of music now. Also, the brain gets quite
tired of playing exactly the same thing over and over (this is why dotted
eighth sixteenth, sixteenth dotted eighth, triplets is a good pattern for
woodshedding).

Also - Tony -
I did not mean so much to accent the 3rd and 6th since you are right - there
is little time to do gross accents. However, it has been arguesd (I do not
remember by whom other than a teacher of mine - Florie Rothenberg) that
these eighths (3,6) are the most important to the underlying feel (whatever
that may be) of the piece. On my last performance (only this movement), I
tried to implement this feeling into my music (it does add drive - if you
want that here - I did), and got good responses from the audience.
