There is some truth to this. He used to play on very old clarinets and wooden
mouthpieces early in his career. The playing he did then I think of as VERY
German sounding. Since he started using new instruments and mouthpieces, he
sounds much more 'international' (also with much improved intonation and
smoothness) but there is still no mistaking the German system instruments.
