Tone color on different clarinets

Regarding the sound difference of a German style clarinet versus French
clarinet, I can tell you the following story.

In 1990 I taught for a year at Indiana University. There was a Master
class given by Alfred Prinz.
Viennese, of course. Either Hammerschmidt or Wurlitzer clarinets, I
don't remember which.

At the class he took out his clarinets and preluded a bit.

During the class, there was one player whose clarinet was sounding
typically French, Buffet with French mouthpiece and reed.

Mr.Prinz asked to try her clarinet .

Lo and behold, on her clarinet he sounded just like he did on his own
German style clarinet. So?

I guess it's the way you hear it that counts.
