I agree. The Brahms recordings are outstanding. It is well worth it to
seek out the old Szell/Cleveland recordings. These recordings are a
model of great orchestral playing, and many are available at budget
prices. The new reissues however, sound much better in many cases, as
some of the mastering on the budget series had an inferior sound
quality. The Great Performances series on LP for example had an enhanced
treble that often gave a steely sound to the orchestra. The new ones
restore the warmth and beauty to the orchestra's sound.
