He's Hungarian by descent, spelt "Dohnanyi" -- and also has a "von",
presumably of
Austro-Hungarian origin. His composer father's name was "Erno" - with 2
dashes over the "o" to denote a long rounded front vowel.
More than you wished to be told, maybe.....
