You might want to get a second (or third) opinion anyway.

I had an elbow problem, for which I saw a specialist, who
immediately recommended a) eliminate the activity that bothered
the elbow (playing my instruments), and b) surgery. I wasn't
willing to do either!

I got him to give me a referral to a physical therapist, even
though he didn't really want to, and she gave me exercises which
now have my elbow just about fixed.....

My input boils down to: don't necessarily believe the first
doctor you see, no matter what the credentials....
