I haven't heard the Schumann or Dvorak recordings David Hattner mentioned,
but after his previous posts I made good on an old promise to myself to
seek out the Brahms Symphonies with Marcellus and Cleveland/Szell. Found
a box set of LP's and was stunned; great sound, magnificent playing, and
tempi that flow and breathe just right. I can imagine different
interpretations, but not any better. I envy those who heard the
orchestra live in that period, and thanks David for reminding us of these
recordings.
