Subj: [kl] It's that time of the evening ... Pledge stats again
Date: Tue, 6 Oct 1998 19:58:51 -0400

Got home late today - just finished dinner & I'm sitting at my home
computer. There were a number of new pledges today:
Jeff Carwile, Ken Shaw, Judy Figi, Richard W. Novy, Mark Margolies,
Sheryl Lynn Katz. and Mike Barnard. My thanks to all!

There's been 3231.00 pledges (96 people or organizations), and I've now
received 1605.00. All checks I've received are acknowledged via e-mail
immediately upon receipt; if you sent a check a couple of weeks back and
haven't received any notice, then I haven't yet received it.

Sneezy II booted properly last night on its one disk; the tape drive
backs up properly, and the memory passed an evening of self-tests. The
Ethernet card driver isn't working yet, and it needs another disk for
mirroring before I feel very comfortable. The monitor I'm using is a
free junque one; hopefully I'll have received enough in checks by the
end of the week to get a reasonably good but cheap new one and another
disk for mirroring. For those of you that don't know about mirroring -
it means that a second disk looks exactly like the first, and as things
change on the primary disk they change on the secondary disk. If
anything goes wrong on either disk the other takes over without any
hitches, and lets the operator know that the disks need attention. The
current Sneezy is set up that way; it keeps the operating system and
vital resources (like the mailing list :) running without too much
downtime.

The data disks (which we don't have yet - either disks or controllers)
aren't going to be mirrored, just backed up daily via the tape drive. If
they fail it's not a catastrophe that requires me to jump out of bed &
drive over to Sneezy II to fix; it can wait a day or two.

Sneezy I is set up to page me wherever I am if something starts getting
suspicious; Sneezy II will be set up to do the same.

That pretty much tells you where the money is going; I'm trying to put
together a $15,000 server for $5000.00 . Computer City going out of
business has definitely helped (30-50% markdowns on a lot of products -
ended up being cheaper than the "parts" stores).

I can still use lots of financial help; donate please if you can. For
further information, feel free to contact me at charette@-----.org or
visit the Pledge Page at www.sneezy.org/PledgePage.html

Now, if I can just get the Ethernet card running & use my SparQ from my
personal PC to update the OS on Sneezy II, get my practice in, say hi to
the kids & wife, and get some sleep :^)
