In truth, there have indeed been Basses made in the key of A, and they
were a rare thing - I imagine owning two basses back then was just as much
of a luxury as it is now. I have seen (but not played) two in my time,
both from ealr 1900s....

And there are Bb clar parts...well, at least one that I've seen, that go
to Eb. I had the pleasure of performing Pini di Roma with the Las Cruces
Symp. on bass this weekend (yay - i get to double horn parts!). In the
second movement, written in Bb for Clars 1,2, and bass, there is an octave
doubling between clar1 and the bass, down to Eb. Of course, she played
that one line on A while I played without the trouble of transpostion.

Then I got to the third mvt...bass in La...DOH!
