Duncan McRoberts asked,
>>While we are on the topic of reeds, The other day, some of my jazz students
approched me with a desire to make their own reeds. What book should I read so
that I can teach them to make their own reeds?>>

Look for the 40-page pamphlet, _Handbook for Making and Adjusting Single Reeds
for All Clarinets and Saxophones_ by Kalmen Opperman, illustrated with
excellent, clear line drawings by Vera Yeager. I have the 1956 edition
published by Chappell Music Co. Not sure who publishes it now, but I've seen
it in music stores recently.

Thanks to Gary Van Cott and Lee Hickling for the information about the
Vibrator reeds with the grooves on them. I've never found one in playable
condition. I think I'll try carving up a Vandoren and see how it sounds.
Hmm, now that Halloween is on the way, maybe I should carve in some magickal
symbols for better intonation and banishment of squeaks.
