Not really. "Freigedank" means "Freethinker" and it was not at all
uncommon at that time for anyone who posted a right-wing comment
to sign it as "Freethinker." Later when the article was published
again, it was under his own name.

No he didn't and no he wasn't. The name change was supposed to be
to Bartholdy because Felix's father did not want the son bearing
a name of such obviously Jewish origin (Moses Mendelssohn was, at
that time, one of Europe's most important philosophers and all knew
that he was Jewish), and Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy was a Lutheran
Prostestant and should not be referred to as a Jew. He was converted
at the age of 14 and he, therefore, severed his ties to Judaism.
