In my high school in California in the mid-60s, marching band took the
place of PE. It didn't interfere with the concert band class. We practiced
one evening a week for half-time shows (not every week either) and the
Friday after Thanksgiving for the Long Beach Band Review which was the next
day. Our half-time shows were nothing special but we had one of the top
parade bands in Southern California.

The week after the Long Beach Band Review, marching band was transformed
into a regular PE class and that was it for the year. A positive
experience without a huge expenditure of time.

But, I would only do it again it all we played was Wagner!
