I'm not sure what your trying to get at with these statements. I am very
anti marching band...hell I went to University of North Texas, it had
like mega marching band hype, i hate marching band, I consider it a
waste of time. But marching band does have it place in history, how else
would the traditional "band" come into play without John Philip Sousa
writing marches? Marching bands were the thing at the turn of the
century, people would turn out in droves to see them. And they were very
much musicians, and very good at it. I am sure you heard the stories of
Sousa never playing his marches the same way twice, the musicians had to
constantly be using there musical 'sense' to keep pace, and keep the
music 'original'. I don't try to blast marching bands, even though i
know (as many know...the hard work that goes into it, is never fully
appreciated) its a waste of time, energy, money, and musicianship. But
that is today, and at one time they were very appreciated, and praised.
Granted that setting has moved from the marching band, to our
traditional concert band. It is very possible to be musical in marching
band...i've seen it done, but the extra things that go into it, the hype
and such, make it harder to distingish as music rather than a sport.
