I suppose it's relative to the group you are playing in, and I can sympathize.
I used to belong to a community band. The director loved my playing BUT his
one complaint was that I was "not loud enough." How in the world can a
clarinet compete with brass instruments playing fff? I find there is a point
where playing louder causes me lose control of pitch. That jars my nerves
terribly and I just cannot do it. For now, you need to go with the flow and do
your best to be flexible. Just be careful about sacrificing tone for volume.
