I consider the ability to sit read one of the true hallmarks of the
professional musician. (Wish I was better--but at my age everything I
haven't practiced hard IS sight reading).

I think the director of the community college band I play in would rather
sight read then rehearse. He wasn't even at rehearsal last night and still
had three pieces for us to read including the William Byrd Suite (Gordon
Jacob) which I hadn't played since high school. Surprisingly few members
of the band had played it before. Great piece.
