While we clarinet players badly want to believe this, the painful fact of the
matter is that, for the most part, your clarinet and flute sections could take
the field with painted broomsticks and the audience could not tell the
difference. Our "gentle" tone rarely carries past the sidelines, especially
when the brass section is playing as well.

There are exceptions, of course, but they are rare.
