I think the point was, if someone alters a mouthpiece, regardless of who it is working on the mouthpiece, it is altering the original workmanship of the creator of the mouthpiece. I fully agree that, if I wanted a Matson mouthpiece, I'd buy one. The older mouthpieces are obviously made differently than the ones today, which most are made almost in their entirety by machines. My Gigliotti mouthpiece needs refacing because it is uneven, which is pretty common for those mouthpieces, but i bought it anyway, knowing I would get it resurfaced, so that it would not be so particular with reeds. I could not necessarily sell it as a Gigliotti faced mouthpiece, if I get it resurfaced, because maybe the person wouldn't want it resurfaced the way I would have it done. If I purchased a Kaspar (spending $200+ on a mouthpiece,) I would want it original. Otherwise, I wouldn't want to pay that much for it. I would buy a Marcellus (Woodwind brand) mouthpiece or some other mouthpiece modelled after the Kaspars, for $70-80.

I like the Morgan mouthpieces, which are hand-surfaced, but wouldn't buy a hand-surfaced mouthpiece, if I had to have someone else resurface it, especially if I had to pay a lot of money for it to begin with. And after it is resurfaced? Resale for it would have to suffer, if it is not the original hand-surfaced lay, that you would be buying the mouthpiece for anyway.
