Just thought I'd update everyone. I just found out my son's using them.
Here's his comments to me (excerpted from an email message):

"By the way, I'm using the plastic reed right now, I think they are
amazing. Once you cut them just right, they last forever and they sound
beautiful too. Most of us in the studio are using them now."

The studio refers to Richard Hawkin's studio up at Interlochen.
