Thanks, Ken & Robert, for your suggestions! Believe me, if I had a spare
$3000.00 I might take you up on the Selmer CT. But this is all a couple of
years' down the line, so I have plenty of time to try out clarinets, hoping
all the while I *don't* fall in love with one on the spot. That would make
a huge dent in the plastic money.

I only play my little clarinet with jazz combos. My "legit" playing is all
bass clarinet. I've done occasional forays into jazz with my bass, but
listening to me play bass clarinet bebop is only slightly less painful than
listening to the Scottish Highland Pipers playing an ABBA medley.

It probably doesn't help that my bass clarinet is a Yamaha student model,
great for what you pay for but next to my fellow bass clarinetist's
gorgeous low-C Selmer, a bit of a wanker. Alas, my lust for instruments is
boundless, but my pocketbook isn't. It also helps to have a Significant
Other (annoying percussionists!) who, while I'm eyeballing a really
gorgeous huge Conn at the Best Music annex, will state in a loud voice
"what the hell are *you* going to do with a bass saxophone, anyway?" When
you only do this for kicks, you can't justify anything. And being a
professional database manager doesn't make for nifty new toys-- "Look
honey! Advanced SQL for Dummies!" It's just not the same.

But again, thanks for the advice! It gives me an idea of what I should be
looking for in a good jazz clarinet.
