I was thinking about this thread as I was swabbing my horn last night. I
used to have the bunching problem when I used the Buffet logo cotton swabs
(that usually accompany new Buffet horns), but ever since I switched to
Coppenbarger silk, have never, ever had a problem. To store the swab, I
fold it lengthwise, then roll it up and wrap the string around it. To
open it up, I hold the weight and drop the rolled-up swab, sort of like a
yo-yo, whereupon it opens up fully. After removing the mouthpiece, I pull
the swab through the entire horn in both directions, then dry out the
sockets and tenons as I disassemble it. The only problem I've ever had
with these swabs is a slightly funky smell. I've always wondered if they
are machine-washable (delicate cycle) -- I plan on finding out soon!
