Aluminum machining is relatively easy and safe. The dust is NOT
particularly flammable (not to be confused with magnesium!), and there are
thousands of machine shops worldwide cutting/milling aluminum all the time,
so disposal of the shavings can't be too big a problem. Finally, the
"creep" mentioned is a phenomenon in some materials whereby they stretch
(like taffy) when under SUSTAINED CONSTANT LOAD. This generally occurs at
elevated temperatures, but can occur at room temperatures in some
materials, mainly certain elastomers. However, the key words are UNDER
CONSTANT LOAD (which a clarinet is not). If you, for some reason, chose to
hang your aluminum clarinet from the ceiling with a 50-lb. weight attached
to the low end, and kept it there for months, you MIGHT have to worry about
creep. Otherwise, not a problem.
