I know that Clarinets have been made from some woods other than Grenadilla.
I have heard of clarinets made from: boxwood, cocobollo (sp?), and lignum
vitae but I have never seen nor played any. There are also some native north
american hardwoods that are possible alternatives such as American
Hophornbeam (aka musclewood), osage, and black walnut. I know from some
casual woodworking that these woods are close grained and very hard. Does
anyone know if they have ever been used for clarinets or other woodwinds?
