Subj: [kl] Loss of Alan Balter--clarinetist/conductor
Date: Mon, 21 Sep 1998 10:19:39 -0400

I thought I would pass on sad information. The wonderful clarinetist and
orchestral conductor Alan Balter died about three weeks of complications
and infections from lung surgery. Alan had let his contract with the
Memphis Symphony lapse in May and was going to concentrate on the Akron
Symphony which he still conducted and increase his clarinet playing,
teaching and do some clarinet recordings.

Jim Gholson, principal clarinet with the MSO, should be able to provide
more details on this tragic loss.
