Aren't cargo compartments pressurized like the passenger compartment? I am
pretty sure they are.

I got my R-13 brought over from England for me - it's been to 30,000 feet
several times, at least twice in the cargo hold of the plane. So it's been
very very cold, then brought down to sea level again. I played the crap
out
of it without going through the breaking in process, and I've never had any
problems at all. I know of players here who leave their horns in their
cars
on frosty nights, then play them in the morning with no problems. I think
that if an instrument is going to crack, it's probably because of the wood
and there's not an awful lot we can do about it. A teacher here bought a
brand new Yamaha; within a week it had cracked from the A key right up to
the tenon.
