I have experienced success with my students' "throat problems" by
instructing them to blow from their lips. This gives them a proactive
focus away from the throat allowing the throat to relax and open
naturally with the air flow. It also put the sound focus up front
providing a better core sound as opposed to the open, reedy sound of a
throat forced open.
