My first clarinet - a plastic Yamaha - ended up with two different joints.
I managed to break the tenon on the lower joint - I pulled the bell off and
the tenon fell off into my hand! I took it into the local music store,
where I'd bought the instrument from, and they replaced the joint and bell.
That was when I was eleven; I played the horn with no problems until I was
nearly 15, when I upgraded to my R-13. I don't know whether they matched
the bores or not, but the pitch wasn't affected at all. The only pitch
problem I had was that I was always sharp - the barrel said "5mm (3mm?
Can't remember) short" on it, and I never got around to getting a new one.
But the horn was in tune with itself. I see the guy who I sold it to
occasionally, and he's never reported any problems to me.

If I could be sure that the clarinet was a) not made up of stolen parts, and
b) didn't have any pitch problems, then yes, I think I would. I haven't
ever bought a clarinet with mismatched serial numbers, but then the only
used horn I've bought was my A clarinet. But I don't think that NZ has a
serious problem with stolen instruments - the musical world here is really
too small. If an high-level player's instrument is stolen, every other
high-level player of that instrument in the cityknows about it within days -
the grapevine works very very quickly, and most stolen instruments get
recovered.
