The farther away from the designed pitch you try to adjust it, the farther
out of tune with ITSELF it will become in various intervals, especially
across the break.

Expansion or contraction of the wood (brass, strings, whatever) will cause
the instrument to be slightly off at temperatures other than the designed
one. That can be adjusted with barrel joints, tuning slides, etc. But you
have to start SOMEWHERE!
