Klarinet Archive - Posting 000480.txt from 1998/09

In my sideline business resuscitating dead clarinets, I have occasion to see
and try many clarinets. I consistently find that the ligature makes a
significant difference in the way a clarinet responds. The no-name stock
ligatures that I include with my clarinets are "ok," but I always suggest that
serious musicians consider moving up to BG Revelation (my favorite) or another
kind. I can feel the difference in playing with a stock ligature vs. a BG.
Additionally, I have always had better "luck" with inverted ligatures, but
this may not be true for all clarinetists.
Anyway, I believe there are issues here beyond the fact that a ligature holds
the reed on the mouthpiece. I know that quip was made partly in jest ;-)
