The dialect of French spoken in Provence, the south of France, was called
langue d'oc, because the southerners' word for yes was oc, not oui. Le pays
d'oc, then, would be southern France. I am told that the old form oc is
seldom heard today. Perhaps M. Kloc will have more to say on the subject.

An exact translation would be awkward, and I would English the title as
Variations on a Provencal Air, or perhaps Variations on a Languedoc Air.
