Subject: swabs vs. shove-its
I'm curious to whether swabs are better or worse than using shove-it pads in
wooden clarinets.
I ask because I've been using both until recently, when time became more
critical, I've left out swabbing and just inserted the sove-its and let the
clarinet be. Is this safe practice for wooden clarinets? (I've only used
shove-its on my plastic for the last 5 years and they've worked well there.)
Thanks.

Jason, using a shove-it to dry the bore without first using a swab is the
equivalent of washing a t-shirt, and wearing it to dry (except that the
clarinet is wooden, you are keeping a wet object inside, while the outside
is dry - The Clarinet could easily crack that way). The shove-it is
designed to be used after swabbing to get pads that are closed dry by the
fibers expanding to touch them. If the fibers are wet, they mat, and do not
do their job properly.
