Preventing Cracks:

I don't remember where I saw this advice; I think maybe in the
WW & BW catalog. Anyway, the advice was to warm the instrument
in your hands for a few minutes before playing. My guess is
that the theory behind it is to spread warmth both outside and
(from breath) inside--the advice I read didn't explain *why*.

Anyway, I've been doing this faithfully for 7-8 years, and have
yet to get a crack (knock on wood). I *didn't* do it when I was
in high school, and my expensive new horn got a crack within a
year (of course I sometimes didn't swab it out, either :-) ).
