I must agree w/ Karl. I play regularly in a wind ensemble (Monday nights)
and an orchestra (Wednesday nights). I am *much* more tired after the
Monday rehearsal, even if I'm not playing Eb.

In the band, we clarinets tend to play nearly all of the time. In
orchestra, there are instances where you don't play for minutes at a time.
(Of course, if the orchestra is typical, you spend more rehearsal time
reading magazines while the conductor beats the strings than playing).

You certainly aren't "making this up," but I have to say that I find the
opposite is true when I play. I get much more tired playing wind
ensemble/band music than I do when I play in an orchestra. I _do_ play more,
and because I hear less of myself in a band or wind ensemble clarinet
section, I tend to play harder and probably louder. I rely very much on the
aural feedback I get when I play one-to-a-part in an orchestra section
(whether I'm playing principal or not) to regulate my playing. I don't get
to play much band music anymore, but when I do, I find that, despite my best
efforts, I don't end up keeping the sound-producing/controlling parts of my
technique as much under control with the result that I tire more quickly.
Your experience obviously differs. It will be interesting to read everyone
else's reaction to your premise.
