I can't help you on what to teach, but I do know one don't:
Don't criticize their previous teacher in front of the student or
parent! Too many times we hear "your last teacher didn't <fill in the
blank>? That's something _everyone_ needs to do!" Even if true -
methods change over time, and each teacher has different ideas.
