I guess I usually sound like a broken record. Fredrick Weiner in Mineola, NY (Long Island - short train ride away from the city) is the best option of the places I've seen in NYC Area. His number (again) is 1-800-622-CORK. They would have by far the biggest selection and by far the best prices in NYC AND most other places. Give him a call. He can set up an appointment for your friend to try out saxes (maybe 10 or more brands, if your friend so desires). He can also try out mouthpiece/saxophone combinations and more. Great service too.
