Here is a different take on this discussion-
I know of some elementary band directors of 5th grade beginning band who
begin a few students on bass clarinet. The reasoning being that it is
hard to get as much facility from a beginning trombone or other low
brass player, and it adds a bottom to the band with less effort.

I have my own opinions, but I am interested in thoughts about possible
long range effects (on technique, embouchure development, range, etc).
especially if the student were to later want or need to pick up the B
flat clarinet in middle school or HS.
