It might help to break down the music- analysis of phrase structure and
overall form if you've had music theory. If not, look for the key and all
key changes. Then look in the first section and see if things repeat
either exactly or in another key, continue this through the piece and look
for things that can help you stay straight when you go through the music
(which you should be able to play correctly before you try to memorize it!)
Maybe you will see an A major scale and two measures later an a minor
scale. Make sure you remember that! Maybe there will be a sequence or
arpeggio that ocurrs in two or three (or more) places- once you get the
sequence you just have to remember when it occurs. If there are things
that seem really similar then analyze how they are different and if there
is a pattern to the alterations.
You still have to memorize the whole piece but doing it analytically
instead of by rote can be much easier, or at least not complete drudgery!
