Here's how I deal with my local music store...

I check prices in the Woodwind & Brasswind or Giardinelli's or whatever. Then
I ask the local store owner if he can meet or come close to their price. He
usually is willing to work with me on prices, especially on more expensive
items where there is presumbly more margin for him. I do NOT try things out at
the store and then buy mail order. I think that would be immoral or at least
unethical. Convenience, service, and support are worth money to me and I
factor those in. The "raw" price of an item is only one variable and, in some
cases, it is probably one of the less important factors.
