Well said! Even though I am in the business of selling instruments, I
agree that a brand-new pro instrument is not necessary for everyone. Used
instruments can be an exceptional value, since they don't lose that big
chunk when they leave the store. Your advice about a used intermediate may
be the best of all. Of course, try it first. If it improves the sound,
the cost is low, and allows one to save up for the BIG purchase later if
things work out. The first clarinet in the Notre Dame concert band when I
was there played on a Signet and could blow the ligatures off anybody else
around! Owning a Ferrari does not make you a better driver, it just gives
you a little more POTENTIAL to grow. But is that much potential really
WORTH it when you only intend to drive three blocks to church on Sunday?
In other words, get a good handle on WHERE you are GOING with music before
you pick your "vehicle."

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is too loud.
