At the risk of drawing the ire of some members of this list, I would recommend
that if you can afford it, buy the best. In my opinion, the Buffet R13 is the
best clarinet you can buy for your present and future needs. It will stand you
in good stead the rest of your life whether you become a professional musician
or not. Yes, there are higher-end clarinets from Buffet and others, but you
probably do not need the bells and whistles they offer. I would also suggest
that you buy an instrument with silver-plated keys. The nickel plate on the
keys of my instrument are beginning to wear after 10 years of use, including
"high mileage" use the last year or so. Silver is easier to replate by hand.
If you keep your clarinet a long time, you'll want to keep it looking good,
too.
